The Little Black Dress ~ A Woman’s Best Friend
Something happened a few days ago that really intrigued me. At a recent meeting, a female coworker gave me a compliment on my appearance. She not only said I looked lovely but added a short explanation as to why, what I was wearing was very effective. I was wearing my LBD - Little Black Dress.
Later that day I was at a meeting with some other females and realized we were all dressed in black. Since then I seem to have been noticing how many woman wear the little black dress and how versatile it really is to any wardrobe.
I am on the far left.
LBD - from a Woman’s Perspective
Every woman knows that the Little Black Dress is our fall-back option for any business event, and for formal and semi-formal occasions such as weddings and engagement parties. The theory is that - you cannot go wrong wearing a black dress. We are taught from an early age that black will suit every woman. Black is often our safe choice when we cannot find anything to buy in a color that we like and that suits us. As a result, we wear the Little Black Dress and think nothing more of it.
Make Your LBD Stand Out in a Sea of Black
Here are five modern dressing tips to make you shine in your Little Black Dress.
The first tip is to choose black or a color close to an all-black color. A solid black dress is not the most flattering color for every woman. It can be harsh and draining on many women. There are alternatives. Grape which is a black/purple, rich dark-chocolate brown, red/black, dark deep grey, french navy which is a black/navy, dark green or a dark teal green are colors that may be more flattering for you. These colors are not always easy to find but when you do notice one, they are elegant alternatives to black.

The second tip is to choose a simple, modern classic style that suits your body shape and personality. Make sure your dress fits properly. You can look very sexy and seductive in form fitting dress without looking like your in a sardine can. For larger hips a body skimming dress rather than tight dress will make you look like a million bucks.

The third tip is for all you pale skinned females (like myself). The trick not to appear washed out in dark colors is to leave some skin space below your neckline. You want your face to shine rather than be drained by a very dark color.

The fourth tip is to choose your dark or Little Black Dress in a matt fabric and with minimum distractions to hide trouble spots such as large hips, big belly and large breasts. Pleats, frills, lace, buttons etc. will only highlight your trouble spots. The trick is to make the casual observer to look at your smiling face rather than notice your flaws.

Lastly, add an accessory - necklace, scarf, brooch, or earrings - that is large enough to draw attention upward. A fine gold or silver chain will not do the job. Black is a perfect neutral background to add a light or bright color to give a medium or high contrast effect that draws people to your face. Wear an accessory to match your skin or eye colors or a combination of those colors.
Or toss on a bright jacket such as this cute orange one and you will shine and stand out from all those other women in their boring LBD’s.
